About Us

The Kellar Institute for Human DisAbilities (KIHd) is an interdisciplinary campus-based organization focusing on improving the lives and productivity of children and adults with disabilities. KIHd combines the resources of the university with local, state, regional, national, public, and private sector agencies and organizations to develop products, services, and programs for persons with disabilities.

  • Touch Window (Edmark) - a touch sensitive screen that allows the user to activate the computer by touching the screen.
  • HeadMouse - device allows the user to control the mouse with head movements
  • Erica Eye Response System - A computer system that allows the user to control mouse movements and clicking on the computer using eye gaze. (Eye Response Technologies).
  • Quartet - voice activated environmental control device that will allow an individual to control electrical and inferred devices using voice commands. This device can also be controlled with a switch for those who are non-verbal

  • Alphasmart Pro (AlphaSmart) - stand alone keyboard with LCD display that allows the user to type at a remote location and then download the information to a word processing program on a Mac or PC computer.
  • Inspiration - Software organizational tool allows information to be represented graphically or in an outline form.
  • Co:Writer (Don Johnston Inc.) - word prediction software
  • Write Outloud (Don Johnston Inc.) - talking word processor.
  • TextHELP Read & Write - Software designed for individuals with dyslexia and or learning disabilities. This software offers word prediction, document reading and talking spell checker among other features.
  • WYNN Wizard- (Freedom Scientific) Optical Character Recognition (OCR) scanning software that allows text on paper to be scanned into the computer, processed, and then read by the computer using a software speech synthesizer.

Access for People who are Blind or Visually Impaired

  • Aladdin Gene (Telesensory) - color CCTV, used to enlarge text and graphics. It can be connected to a computer to provide a split screen, which can display the computer screen and document placed under the camera simultaneously.
  • Duxbury Braille Translation Software - allows a PC to translate text into Braille and send it to a Braille embosser.
  • JAWS for Windows 3.7(Freedom Scientific) - screen reading software for the Windows operating system.
  • ZoomText Xtra - Screen enlarging software (Ai Squared)

    Access for People who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing
