The Kellar Institute for Human DisAbilities (KIHd) is an interdisciplinary campus-based organization focusing on improving the lives and productivity of children and adults with disabilities. KIHd combines the resources of the university with local, state, regional, national, public, and private sector agencies and organizations to develop products, services, and programs for persons with disabilities.

Preference-Based Teaching: Helping People with Intellectual Disabilities Enjoy Learning without Problem Behavior

This workshop will describe evidence-based ways to make teaching enjoyable for learners with intellectual and related disabilities and eliminate the reasons learners act out during teaching sessions. Topics to be covered include how to establish rapport with learners who have challenging behavior so the learners enjoy interacting with the instructor, identify strong learner preferences, time the scheduling of teaching sessions to enhance enjoyment, tailor teaching strategies to individual learner preferences, and embed preferences and choices within teaching processes. The workshop format will include instructor presentation supplemented with power point slides, instructor demonstration of relevant strategies and trainee practice with instructor feedback, and working handouts. Relevant research findings that provide the evidence base for recommended strategies will also be summarized.

Dr. Dennis Reid has 40 years of experience as a manager and clinician in residential, educational, and community support settings for people with intellectual and related disabilities, and has consulted with human service agencies in the majority of states of the United States as well as Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. He has published over 140 refereed journal articles and book chapters focusing on applied behavior analysis and authored or co-authored eight books. he was awarded Fellowship status in the Association for Behavior Analysis International and in 2006 received the AAIDD International Research Award. Dennis is the founder and current director of the Carolina Behavior Analysis and Support Center in Morganton, North Carolina.
