About Us

The Kellar Institute for Human DisAbilities (KIHd) is an interdisciplinary campus-based organization focusing on improving the lives and productivity of children and adults with disabilities. KIHd combines the resources of the university with local, state, regional, national, public, and private sector agencies and organizations to develop products, services, and programs for persons with disabilities.

ASPIRE Eligibility

Recruitment focuses on applicants who meet these desired or required characteristics:

  • Be an individual with a disability (desired)  
  • Be an individual from diverse backgrounds/culturally and linguistically diverse (desired)
  • Be a U.S. citizen
  • Certification in special education, general education, or related service area
  • Commit to continued service in special education in the role of assistant professor (or similar) in higher education as a condition for accepting grant support (i.e., two years of service for every year of grant funding)
  • Certify commitment to complete the doctoral program within the specified time period (refer to Program of Studies) as a full-time student
  • Demonstrate competence in teaching students with high-incidence disabilities who are culturally and linguistically diverse; high-need students (e.g., socioeconomic) for a minimum of three years
    • When PhD application is submitted, Recommendation letter/s document this.
  • Be eligible for immediate admittance to GMU PhD in Education and Human Development Programs (refer to eligibility requirements on https://education.gmu.edu/phd-in-education/phd-admissions)
